World Series-winning manager gets emotional after learning on live TV his team will retire his number

White Sox to retire Ozzie Guillén's No. 13 on live broadcast

Chicago White Sox announced during Friday's home opener at Guaranteed Rate Field that they will retire former manager Ozzie Guillén's No. 13 jersey. The surprise came on a live CHSN telecast in the bottom of the third inning, as host Chuck Garfien sat with Guillén and White Sox legend Scott Podsednik. Podsednik read the news from an envelope, prompting Guillén to react with emotion.

Podsednik stated the team would honor Guillén with a special ceremony on Saturday, August 8. Guillén joked, "Another bobblehead?" before Podsednik continued: "With a special ceremony retiring his No. 13 uniform." The shortstop, who played 13 seasons with the White Sox, noted Guillén would become the 13th person in franchise history to have his number retired and the first manager. Fans chanted Guillén's name over the public address system as the two men hugged, with Guillén wiping away tears and asking, "Oh my God, where's my wife?" He added, "Wow. I don’t know how to react, how to say thank you to the White Sox organization. Wow."

Guillén managed the White Sox to their 2005 World Series title, the franchise's first championship in 88 years after defeating the Houston Astros. He has served as a team analyst since 2019. The White Sox have struggled in recent seasons, making the moment a rare highlight.

The jersey retirement ceremony is set for August 8 at Guaranteed Rate Field.
