NASCAR indefinitely suspended Craftsman Truck Series driver Daniel Dye on October 8, 2024, for violating the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct after he made disparaging remarks about NTT IndyCar Series driver David Malukas during a livestream.[1][2]
In the video, which circulated widely on social media, Dye mocked Malukas' voice, describing it as "gay" while recounting an interaction between the two drivers.[2]
Dye, a 22-year-old driver from Mooresville, North Carolina, competing full-time for McAnally-Haas Motorsports in the No. 43 Chevrolet, issued a public apology on X, formerly Twitter, the same day. He stated: "I want to first apologize to David Malukas. I recently went on a live stream with some friends and made some careless comments. I chose my words poorly, and I understand why it upset people."[1][2]
In his statement, Dye expressed regret for offending members of the LGBTQ+ community and committed to sensitivity training as required by NASCAR. He noted this as a learning opportunity to be more respectful.[1]
This marks the second indefinite suspension for Dye. In March 2021, at age 18, ARCA Menards Series officials suspended him indefinitely after his arrest on a felony battery charge stemming from an altercation at school where he allegedly punched a classmate. The charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor after a plea deal, and Dye was reinstated in September 2021.[3][4]
Malukas, a 22-year-old Lithuanian-American driver who competed for Dale Coyne Racing with VasserSullivan in 2023 before a preseason injury in 2024, has not publicly commented on the incident.[5]
