CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - Hubert Davis serves as head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team, a position he assumed on April 1, 2021, following Roy Williams' retirement after 33 seasons with the program.[1]
Davis, a former UNC player from 1988-91 and longtime assistant coach, guided the Tar Heels to the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship game in his first season during 2021-22. The No. 8-seeded Tar Heels defeated Marquette, Baylor, UCLA and Duke before falling 72-69 to Kansas in the final on April 4, 2022.[2]
In 2022-23, North Carolina finished 20-13 and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 season.[3]
The Tar Heels rebounded in 2023-24 with a 29-8 record, claiming the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title before earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. UNC advanced to the Sweet 16, losing 89-87 to Alabama on March 29, 2024.[4]

Davis has a career coaching record of 78-31 through the 2023-24 season.[3] The Tar Heels play home games at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.[5]
North Carolina has won six NCAA men's Division I basketball titles (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2017), with Williams securing three during his tenure from 2003-21.[1][6]
Former Tar Heel player Kenny Smith (1984-86), now a basketball analyst for TNT, is among notable alumni connected to the program's storied history.[7]
