Cardoso sprains ankle five weeks before US World Cup
MADRID, May 9 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid midfielder Johnny Cardoso sprained his right ankle during training, the club announced on Thursday, five weeks before the United States opens its World Cup campaign.
Atletico said Cardoso will begin physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions in the gym, with the progress of his recovery determining his return to competition. The La Liga club provided no specific timetable.
The 24-year-old Cardoso has made 23 appearances for the United States since his debut in 2020. Atletico, which was eliminated by Arsenal in the Champions League semifinals this week, has four La Liga rounds remaining and eyes a top-four finish.
The United States faces Paraguay on June 13 in Inglewood, California, followed by matches against Australia and Turkey in Group D.
