Ex-Gamecocks QB Garcia embraces mental health advocacy in cancer fight

Former University of South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia faces stage 4 colorectal cancer after his wife urged him to seek medical attention despite his initial reluctance. Doctors discovered the disease had grown for years during a colonoscopy. Garcia, who previously dismissed mental health concerns, now urges others to discuss their struggles.

Garcia noticed abnormalities but believed he could handle them alone, a mindset shaped by his days taking snaps in Steve Spurrier's offense in Columbia. Groggy from sedation after the procedure, he initially did not fully comprehend the diagnosis's severity. Reality struck upon full explanation, prompting concern first for his family; his older son grasps the situation, but he has delayed telling his youngest daughter.

Garcia quarterbacked the South Carolina Gamecocks, including games against Georgia in 2011 and Kentucky in 2009. In a recent interview, he shared his transformed perspective: "In years past, I thought mental health was an absolute joke... This whole process has opened my eyes... I encourage everyone to speak it up."

After his first chemotherapy treatment, Garcia maintains a positive outlook for himself and his family while continuing to train athletes when possible. Support has poured in from figures including Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and thousands of others. He takes the battle one day at a time.
