Belichick Describes Taylor's Instincts for Spotting Blocking Assignments
Bill Belichick described how Lawrence Taylor could identify his blocker on any given play simply by observing the opposing player's expression across the line of scrimmage. The former Giants linebacker, according to Belichick, relied on this visual cue to determine whether an opponent appeared nervous. If the player looked anxious, Taylor concluded that individual was assigned to block him.
Belichick made the comments during an appearance on the program hosted by Sean Hannity. He noted that Taylor also assessed the quarterback's demeanor to anticipate pass or run plays. The coach added that these instincts developed rapidly once the game began and allowed Taylor to adjust his approach when the actual blocking scheme differed from the prepared plan.
Belichick coached Taylor from 1981 onward, initially as the Giants' linebackers coach. Taylor recorded 142 sacks over his 13-year career with the team and contributed to Super Bowl victories in 1986 and 1990. Belichick observed that Taylor rarely left the field and participated on special teams units as well.
Belichick stated that he trusted Taylor's on-field assessments enough to adjust defensive adjustments accordingly. The coach said these observations came from watching players' posture and eye direction rather than from any scheme he could teach.
